Professionalism in the Early Years
Professionalism in the Early Years

This textbook provides an excellent overview of the many challenges facing the childcare sector today and gives the reader a really good feel for how it is developing. The editors have put together pieces from several different experts and use case studies to illustrate the issues in a very readable manner.

The book looks at the benefits of studying for a degree in early years, but also examines the difficulties that teachers face in understanding the challenges of working in full daycare settings and with children under three. Many a daycare manager would be relieved to learn that there is recognition of the very varied role they must play, and how frustrating other daycare managers find being compared to teachers in a less than favourable light. The importance of leadership development is covered, as well as the benefits of e-learning to help with studies.

The debate over early education versus childcare is well presented and gives an interesting overview to anyone who is new to the sector and needs bringing up to speed on the whole issue. References to how other countries have developed childcare services are interesting and challenge the reader to consider other models.

This book is a good background text for any student in the early years field, but I would also recommend it to anyone considering a move into further education within the sector, or those involved in policymaking. It tackles some weighty issues but is easy to read and would make a welcome addition to any childcare student's bookshelf.
