
Tracy Brabin was elected Labour MP for Batley and Spen in October 2016, following the murder of predecessor Jo Cox in the Yorkshire constituency earlier that year. Brabin, a former actor and screenwriter for TV soaps and dramas, was a grass roots political activist for many years before Cox encouraged her to get more involved in national party politics. She won a majority of 8,961 at the June 2017 general election and a few weeks later was appointed shadow early years minister.
Where does your interest in politics come from?
As an actor I never played a character that had to wear a suit; I had a northern accent and was from the Howden Clough council estate in Batley. I played working class characters and my life reflected the parts I was offered.
