SUMMARY

In the UK, gambling is illegal under the age of 18 with the exception of National Lottery products, which can be bought from the age of 16, and some games machines such as fruit machines that have no age restrictions. Despite this, a 2018 survey by the Gambling Commission found 39 per cent of 11- to 16-year-olds had spent their own money on gambling in the previous year.

The researchers analysed data from 37,363 11- to 16-year-olds who took part in the 2017 School Health Research Network Student Health and Wellbeing Survey. Children were asked what kind of gambling they had taken part in and how often their gambling had made them feel bad.
