The United Nations Convention on the Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities guarantees the right for disabled children and young people to an inclusive education (United Nations, 2006). The majority of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) are enrolled in mainstream schools, which enables them to learn alongside their non-SEN peers. However, evidence suggests that enrolment in mainstream school alone is not sufficient to support the social participation of pupils with SEN.
