High-quality, universally available and affordable childcare is vital for families. Yet a survey from Children in Scotland and Daycare Trust reveals a great deal must still be done to ensure an acceptable level of access.
For many parents, childcare is essential, enabling them to work or train. For children, the benefits are well documented in terms of social, learning, development and play opportunities that may not be available elsewhere. The survey shows that parents in Scotland face a postcode lottery, with significant gaps in childcare provision and costs that are the highest in Britain.
