Zievrina Wilson - Manager, Kids Company's Arches II Centre

1 min read Youth Work
The Arches II is a crisis intervention centre in Lambeth, south London. I never know what is going to be waiting for me on any given day. There have been occasions when I have come in to find that somebody has been shot, so you have to be flexible and ready to react quickly to a situation.

My day is dictated by how the young people feel and is not set in stone. About 90 per cent of the children come here as self-referrals. There are 67 people working here and my role is to ensure that they are all briefed and co-ordinated. Although I'm accountable for the centre, it is very different from a normal, paper-pushing office job. You have to be a Jack-of-all-trades and it is essential I continue to work directly with young people to maintain that skillset.

I used to be a teacher and found out about Kids Company through a placement, which led on to volunteering. I was increasingly frustrated by the bureaucracy in schools and the fact that helping some young people overcome the barriers to education wasn't really part of the job. I eventually decided to work somewhere that I could really empower children.
