YPN Foundation National Youth Conference: Report to redefineself-harm condition

The National Inquiry into Self-Harm Among Young People from the Camelot Foundation and the Mental Health Foundation, likely to be published in March 2006, will call for youth workers to be trained to deal with a disclosure of self-harm in a positive way.

Susan Elizabeth, director of the Camelot Foundation, said: "There is a need for investment, and for some really high-quality information resources. We will argue for a need to evaluate services; there is an almost total lack of evidence about what works."

Elizabeth said that it seems likely that one in 10 young people have experimented with harming themselves. A report published by the Priory Group this week found that 13 per cent of young people had self-harmed.
