Youth workers face up to identity crisis amid public perceptions

5 mins read Youth Work
CYP Now survey of youth workers reveals that 96 per cent believe the public does not understand what they do, 95 per cent say youth work is a profession and 60 per cent believe they must require a license to practice.

A CYP Now survey designed to gain a better picture of how youth workers see themselves today has revealed many are concerned about the lack of professional recognition they receive and a widespread misunderstanding of youth work by the public.

The anonymous online survey, completed by 323 people working across the public (215), voluntary (94) and private (11) sectors, focused on three key topics - training, public perception and professionalism. Asked whether the public understands what youth workers do, 96 per cent of respondents said no. This view was reinforced by those who, in response to a different question, said the public's perception of youth work is either unfavourable (15 per cent) or neutral (47 per cent).
