Youth Work - Youth workers push for pay boost

3 mins read Youth Work
Youth work unions want a pay rise to reflect the impact the profession has on young people's lives. Janaki Mahadevan reports.

The Community and Youth Workers' Union section of Unite is calling for a significant rise in pay for youth workers to put the profession in line with others from September 2009 to August 2010.

With support from the National Union of Teachers and Unison, the union has submitted a pay claim to the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC), which endorses qualifications and agrees rates of pay for youth workers.

The unions say the claim will become more urgent given that from 2010 youth work will become a graduate profession.

This means that in order to be considered professionally qualified within the JNC framework, an individual starting a course will need to achieve a minimum of an honours degree in a youth and community work subject from September next year.
