Youth work must tap into education policy spine

2 mins read Education Youth Work Editorial
The admission by minister for civil society Nick Hurd that he is still unsure where council-led youth work fits into the government's future vision for the sector is not the most surprising of revelations.

Although, rightly, criticised in some quarters for this policy inertia - it is, after all, more than four months since the youth portfolio was transferred to his watch - Hurd has at least been consistent: since July, his utterances on local authority youth work have been conspicuous by their absence.

To be charitable for a moment, it is perhaps understandable that the minister's focus following the transfer of the youth work portfolio from the Department for Education to the Cabinet Office has been very much on the National Citizen Service, him being one of the architects of the flagship government policy.
