Youth work - Are government policies chipping away at youth work's values?

Concerns are mounting that government policies have undermined youth work's core values. Janaki Mahadevan asks whether these fears are misplaced or indeed justified.

Many youth workers appear to be doing some soul-searching at present. A group met in London this week to discuss In Defence of Youth Work, the open letter authored recently by researcher Tony Taylor.

The letter claims the "special relationship" between youth worker and young person is being undermined by targets, "predictable outcomes" and rules and regulations.

Meanwhile, according to an inquiry by De Montford University in Leicester, expectations laid out in policies such as Every Child Matters have undermined youth work values. The inquiry looked at how policies impacted on youth workers and managers' ability to adhere to the "historic features" of youth work.
