Youth services: Unions plan action over Leicester cuts

The council has sent letters to 72 youth workers, 66 part time and six full time, warning them that their jobs are at risk as the council works out how to balance its lifelong learning budget, on which it overspend by 2.3m.

Unison and the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education are considering action after sending a joint letter to Hussein Suleman, the Liberal Democrat lead councillor for education.

Last week, councillors instructed the council's financial officers to consider the viability of removing senior staff to reduce the impact on frontline workers. Revised proposals will be submitted to the council's cabinet on 11 July. An emergency meeting of the council is expected to be called before September.
