Youth Services: Hughes hopes for 'breakthrough year'

Beverley Hughes told Young People Now that findings from pathfinder projects, due to be published this week, should lead to significant improvements in targeted services.

"What I'd like to see is authorities moving more rapidly to real integration," she said. "I'd like to see these next 12 months as a breakthrough year."

Targeted youth support pathfinders have been running in 14 areas of England since September 2005. These have explored how integrating services can improve support for at- risk young people, and developed and evaluated a Targeted Youth Support Toolkit.

Hughes also said the Department for Education and Skills will shortly be publishing a framework on integrated services.
