In 2001, the county council placed all youth work under the remit of Connexions or district councils, but in light of the Transforming Youth Work agenda it is now reworking that approach.
A new strategic body, Youth Work in Cumbria, is being created to meet the demands. Representatives from the council, the voluntary sector and Connexions will form the body, which will oversee similar partnerships in each of Cumbria's six district councils.
Assistant director of education Paul Davies acknowledged that Cumbria had been a low spender on youth work and said the restructuring came with a commitment from the current administration for three years of "significant growth" to get the youth work budget back in line with Government expectations.
