YOUTH SERVICE: Islington council to merge LGB youth work into mainstream

The north London council originally announced its plans in March, under the banner "mainstreaming equality", at the same time as a 600,000 cut in its youth budget. But while a review of this policy is under way, the council this week said it intends to push ahead.

Councillor James Kempton, executive member for education at the Liberal Democrat-controlled borough, said: "We are determined to target the resources available so as to be most effective in supporting the greatest number of gay and lesbian young people. This means that continuing with the previous arrangements may not be the most effective route."

Former users of North London Line, an LGB youth group that lost its council funding as a result of the move, argue that placing LGB youth services within mainstream projects would provide a lesser service.
