Youth prisons need speech therapists, says MP's review

Youth Justice
MP John Bercow has called for a speech therapist in every youth prison in his interim report on children's speech and language services.

The government asked the Conservative MP to review support for children with speech and language difficulties last September.

Bercow found numerous problems including gaps in early intervention, a shortage of therapists and a need for support in young off-ender institutions (YOIs). His report will call for YOIs to provide specialist help.

Bercow told CYP Now: "The vast majority of offenders are not receiving help. They are meant to have access to employment and training but the reality is they don't as many of them have speech and language difficulties."

But the Home Office has previously dismissed similar calls on the grounds young offenders are not in custody long enough for meaningful interventions.
