Youth Politics: Respect for Youth launches in London

1 min read
Young people in Tower Hamlets, south London, have set up a youth arm of the Respect Party, to be launched later this week.

Although Respect for Youth is affiliated to the national Respect Party, it will only operate in Tower Hamlets.

Aysha Ali, a youth participation officer and party member, said: "A high proportion of young people in Tower Hamlets supported the Respect Party during the general election, and although there is already a national youth arm in Respect for Students, this doesn't include non-students and disadvantaged young people." Respect for Youth will be aimed at 14- to 20-year-olds, and about 100 young people are expected to join. Ali said Respect for Youth will then set up a committee of young people to work out its priorities.

"Respect for Youth was set up by young people to bring together the support in Tower Hamlets. They have concerns about issues affecting young people such as antisocial behaviour orders and the negative image of young people," she added.
