Youth Justice: Youth Justice Board head fears anti-crime promises

Speaking at The Howard League for Penal Reform's annual general meeting last week, Rod Morgan, chair of the board, said the number of children in custody was rising after remaining stable during the summer months.

"I remain concerned about any initiatives that might push the figures up further or rhetoric that might be used in the run-in to the forthcoming general election that might have the same effect," said Morgan.

In the Queen's Speech last week, the Government unveiled a range of legislation, including bills that would give community wardens more powers to deal with antisocial behaviour, and allow the media to name young people who had been convicted of breaching antisocial behaviour orders (ASBOs).
