The move is part of a Howard League for Penal Reform campaign seeking to raise the profile of child deaths in custody. The petition says no child should die in custody, calls for an end to the use of penal custody, and says if a child has to be imprisoned they should be kept safe.
Frances Crook, director of the Howard League, said: Forty-one per cent of children in custody are designated as being vulnerable and every day more and more children are sent to custody.
The campaign has included a series of training conferences, and the distribution of 250,000 leaflets. In Parliament 92 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion supporting the campaign.
