Mission: To help young offenders give something back
Funding: £8,000 from Tower Hamlets Youth Offending Team
Spitalfields City Farm is working with Tower Hamlets' Youth Inclusion and Support Panel to divert young people from antisocial behaviour and crime by giving them new skills and experiences. Young people aged between 14 and 18 who have offended or who are at risk of committing crimes are referred to Spitalfields City Farm to get involved in reparation work around the site. This work can include building bird boxes and gardening to give them the chance to make amends.
Paul Pearce, horticulture programme co-ordinator at the farm, said that the young people are also paired up with adult volunteers, a lot of whom have experience of the criminal justice system or substance abuse.
