Aim: To give young offenders new skills and a sense of achievement

Young offenders in Somerset aged between 15 and 17 have been building bikes from scratch.

The project is overseen by Somerset Youth Offending Team (YOT) and takes on young people who are on intensive surveillance and supervision projects (ISSP).

Nick Birt, senior youth worker at the YOT, says staff wanted to give young people the chance to do something more productive than just servicing their own bikes. "One of the members of the team is a cycling guru and came up with the idea of building brand new bikes from the frame up," he says.
