Youth Justice News: Sentencing - Home Office plans more youthfines

One idea in the Making Sentencing Clearer consultation document is to remove the option of a community order for some minor crimes, which do not warrant a prison sentence.

Instead the maximum penalty that sentencers would be able to impose would be a fine, freeing up probation services to concentrate on more serious offenders.

The document also outlines plans to increase the use of community sentences.

Chris Wright, director of services at youth charity Rainer, said: "Anything that gives a higher profile to community sentences for appropriate young people has got to be something we applaud."
