The prisons inspectorate criticised Feltham for not giving juvenile prisoners access to fresh air in its inspection report last week. Andrew Cross, the prison governor, told Young People Now that he has now secured Youth Justice Board funding for a fenced outdoor area for inmates aged under 18.
He said he has been calling for funding for 18 months, but was only given the money after a group of juveniles climbed out of an exercise yard on to the roof of the prison's Albatross Unit earlier this year.
Cross said he thinks the fact that he allowed prisoners to exercise without sufficient physical barriers in place highlighted the need for those barriers.
