Youth justice: A Summit for Justice

The first Young People Now Youth Justice Summit saw speakers cover topics from reparative justice to ending deaths in juvenile custody, writes Charlotte Goddard.

These were the words of Ross, a young offender who was talking about his experiences of the youth justice system in a DVD shown to delegates at Young People Now's first Youth Justice Summit. Ross's story summed up a number of themes picked up by speakers throughout the two-day event in Whitehall, London. Speakers covered a diverse range of topics including reparative justice, the health and safety of young people in custody, as well as funding, resources and resettlement.

Rise in restorative justice

Ellie Roy, chief executive of the Youth Justice Board, said the development of restorative justice was one of the major reforms of the board since its launch in 1998. "The involvement of 5,000 volunteers on referral panels, and the involvement of victims, are major achievements," she said. "We encourage people in local communities to engage with and support young people via the referral panels and we are looking at further opportunities to develop that."
