Youth imprisonment: Prison trust hires campaign chief

Gibbs will take up the post on 20 September and will be responsible for overseeing the five-year campaign. She is currently director of research organisation the Voluntary Action Media Unit.

The strategy received 1.5m funding from the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund in April. It will give an overview of international policy, and profile countries that avoid judicial proceedings and youth imprisonment. It will also work with other organisations and voluntary groups to explore mental health diversion from the criminal justice system, to lead to the creation of a national network of pre-court and court mental health diversion schemes.

Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust, said: "This is the right time to raise questions about the overuse of custody."
