Youth Hostels - Jersey hostel will close for a year

YHA Jersey is to remain closed until next March as a result of an ongoing police investigation into allegations that child abuse took place on the site before the hostel provider took it over.

Police began investigating the former children's home in February after the remains of a child was found there.

More than 100 people claim to have been abused at the Haut de la Garenne children's home before it closed in 1986. The building was later bought by YHA and turned into a hostel.

A spokesman for the organisation said the situation was under review but it was unlikely that the hostel would reopen until March 2009. "We hope this period will provide the authorities full access to conduct their investigations and allow any remedial works to be carried out at the property," he said.
