The idea of including cadets within the youth offer was discussed by Don Touhig, minister for cadets at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), and officials from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and Home Office at an interdepartmental summit last week (YPN, 25-31 May, p2). They also talked about how to expand the number of cadets and cadet force staff.
The Home Office and DfES also endorsed the MoD's youth initiatives strategy, which involves the forces providing activities for disadvantaged young people in the community.
Robert Higgins, youth policy adviser at the MoD, said: "The two other departments are in favour of working with cadets, and the DfES sees cadets as another resource."
