Youth facilities: Cage football pitch launched in Leeds

Youth inclusion programme Positive Futures is organising games of street-cage football in Leeds to keep young people away from crime.

Over the next three months, a floodlit cage managed by a team of experienced youth and sports workers will be open three evenings a week in the Little London area of Leeds. The portable enclosure acts as a mini-football pitch and can be set up on any area of flat land.

The pilot project is funded by £25,000 from the government's Positive Activities for Young People fund.

A lunchtime taster session has been held in the City of Leeds High School to introduce the concept to young people.

Dan Busfield, project manager with Positive Futures Leeds, said: "It is hoped that the open-access nature of the cage - being on the street, where young people hang out - will attract those who wouldn't come to an indoor session."
