Youth engagement: Services told to prioritise summer activity schemes

In a letter signed by Beverley Hughes, minister for children, young people and families, and Tessa Jowell, minister for culture, media and sport, the Department for Education and Skills calls on councils to focus on the need to "co-ordinate, support and communicate these opportunities, particularly with a view to engaging those living in disadvantaged communities".

Government offices have been asked to report on councils' progress in commissioning activities by the end of this week.

Steve Sipple, head of youth and community services at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, said: "It's a crucial time for us and we put extra money in for summer activities."
