Youth Custody: 18-year-old dies in Reading institution

Liam Ritson, from Surrey, had been awaiting trial since March, when he was arrested on suspicion of robbery and false imprisonment.

Liam, who is thought to have committed suicide using bed sheets to hang himself, is the fourth person under the age of 21 to die in prison custody this year. The prisons ombudsman will investigate the death.

Helen Shaw, co-director of the bereavement organisation Inquest, said: "Liam's death highlights the dangerous consequences of locking up young people and once again questions the Prison Service's ability to care for those in its custody."
