Almost 20,000 young people volunteered for their local youth council last year, according to research conducted by the British Youth Council (BYC).

The findings are detailed in a report set to be published by the BYCtoday (20 July), called Young Voices Stronger Together. It is the firstin a series of reports to highlight the role that youth councils canhave at a local level.

The research was based on an audit of the 620 youth councils in Britain, revealing there were 19,800 youth councillors in 2009/10. In the report, the BYC urges local authorities to invest in youth councils for everylocal community to ensure that children and young people have theopportunity to influence local governance.

"Youth councils enable young people from different backgrounds to cometogether with decision-makers. This not only gives young people a voicebut improves life for the whole community," said BYC chair Alex Delaney."It is crucial that youth councils continue their contribution to theBig Society and that the involvement of volunteer youth councillors isrecognised, alongside good practice of youth councils themselves."
