Youth committees should shape services, argues BYC

The British Youth Council (BYC) is urging the creation of a national youth service committee along with local committees for all council areas to give young people a genuine say in the delivery of services for young people.

Its call comes after children's minister Tim Loughton this month told the education select committee that he wanted to give young people a greater role in assessing youth services. He said that in each area he wanted "a clearly identifiable and accessible youth engagement body that is able to hold the local authority and other agencies to scrutiny".

BYC chair Liam Preston said that at a local level this should take the form of committees made up of young elected members in partnership with councillors. "These joint committees could have a role in reviewing inspection reports with a view to recommending best practice and driving up standards," he said.
