Youth centres are poised for their biggest overhaul since the 1960s.

PJ White examines what services they could be offering young people in the future.

Worn-out pool tables, arcade machines and shabby refreshment stalls are the images typically conjured up by the words "youth club". But, after decades of neglect, change is on the horizon. The government's 10-year youth strategy, out this summer, has promised to "radically change the landscape of youth provision". Aiming High for Young People earmarked an additional £184m for services alongside £495m of continuing funding from 2008 to 2011. This is on top of between £200m to £400m of unclaimed assets from dormant bank accounts, which it is said will fund a new youth facility in every constituency over the next decade.
