Youth champions: We are the champions

Many councils are beginning to appoint youth champions. But is it just tokenism or do they have an important role to play in local communities, asks Graham Readfearn.

The Local Government Association (LGA) made youth participation a central issue in its annual Local Democracy Week, which ended on 22 October.

As part of the event, some councils took part in a scheme to elect youth champions after an online grilling from a panel of young people.

Last year, just 11 out of more than 400 local councils decided to take part in the event called I'm a Councillor, Get Me Out of Here. This year, that figure increased to 28.

Councillors vie for youth role

I'm a Councillor, Get Me Out of Here ran over three weeks, with young people voting online for the politician who they felt best represented their views, eliminating the councillors with the fewest votes during the competition. The politicians who stayed the course were nominated as the authority's youth champion councillor.
