Youth agency vies for dormant cash

1 min read Youth Work
YouthLink Scotland is gearing up to urge the Scottish government to channel cash from dormant bank accounts for the benefit of young people.

The Scottish government is due to launch a consultation later this month looking at how to distribute unclaimed assets from dormant bank accounts.

But, unlike England where the government has said the cash will be used to fund work with young people, Scottish ministers have made no such decision about how to spend its allocation of around £40m initially, with £4m each year thereafter.

Jim Sweeney, chief executive of YouthLink Scotland, said the national youth agency will be running a campaign to try and make the most of the opportunity. It will persuade its members to write to MSPs and ask them to support the use of the money for youth work. The agency will also attend all the consultation events, as well as talk to young people to get their views on how the cash could help.
