Provider: 42nd Street
Name: A Different Spirit
In 1884, philanthropist Thomas Horsfall opened Ancoats Art Museum in Manchester to "alleviate the miserable dullness and emptiness of the life" of local residents. Fast forward 130 years, and mental health charity 42nd Street is delivering a project for 13- to 25-year-olds that builds on Horsfall's legacy.
A Different Spirit, part of 42nd Street's youth engagement programme, is a creative arts project that explores the relationship between culture and wellbeing.
Julie McCarthy, cultural producer at the Ancoats-based charity, launched the project in early 2013 after she came across Horsfall's work while researching the history of the local area.
