Participation in Action: App gives young people a handle on mental health

2 mins read Youth Work Participation
A mobile phone app for young people with mental health issues has been developed by a group of young people and a media arts centre in Liverpool with the aim of supporting them with their feelings and reducing the stigma associated with mental health.

Provider: Foundation for Art and Creative Technology

Name: In Hand

A colourful new mobile phone app has been dubbed as a "digital friend" for young people with mental health issues. In Hand was developed by Liverpool-based Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (Fact), a media arts centre that specialises in participant-led projects, in partnership with a group of 16- to 25-year-olds, some who have experience of mental health problems.

They spent a year working together on the design and development of the app, with the young people involved playing a pivotal role in the prototyping, testing and branding of the final product.

The young people also had the final say about the messages presented in the app as part of Fact's efforts to ensure that it provides the right kind of support for young people with mental health needs.
