Young parents: Bringing up baby

3 mins read
Helping young parents gain confidence isn't easy but one primary care trust has found success by involving youth workers, as Patricia Mannion reports.

Laura Castle is 17 and the mother of 13-month-old Ellie-Mai. For the past 10 months, she's been attending a group for young parents. "It has really made a difference to me," she reveals. "Before I came I had no confidence. But we do activities, I have lots of friends, and I'm much more confident and talkative." It's obviously contagious as her friend Becky Doyle, mother of seven-month-old Keelan, has only been attending the group for four weeks, but already she can feel her confidence growing.

Laura and Becky's project is the second of three young parents' groups running across Eastern Birmingham Primary Care Trust. The projects are an attempt, through the teenage pregnancy strategy, to improve the services on offer by bringing young parents together with a range of professionals.
