The Department for Education and Skills has awarded the charity 160,000 to roll out the Right Track initiative, which it started inBristol in 1998. The initiative is aimed at helping Black young peopleaged 10 to 17 and is credited with reducing reoffending among this groupby 17 per cent in one year.
The funding is a coup for The Children's Society as it attempts to get afoothold in the youth justice sector. The charity has recently appointeda former senior official from the DfES with experience of youth justiceissues and is working on a number of new projects in this area.
The Right Track initiative offers services to agencies includingschools, local authorities, police, the prison service and youthoffending teams.
