Young lack mental health awareness

1 min read Health
A leading child psychiatrist has urged the government to raise young people's awareness of mental illness, after research showed nearly half of 12- to 18-year-olds cannot name a single mental health condition.

Dr Jon Goldin, consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, said it was crucial to have teams of well-trained child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) professionals who are "adequately resourced to provide the best possible care to children and young people with mental health conditions".

His call comes as the government awaits the results of its review of CAMHS and as Great Ormond Street Hospital launches a website about health for young people.

The website's launch follows a survey by the hospital, which found 47 per cent of 12- to 18-year-olds did not think schools do enough to raise awareness of mental health problems.
