Eight years of foster care and a volatile relationship with his familyhad taken their toll on 13-year-old Jamie's mental health. He sufferedfrom memory loss and violent behaviour, including bouts of head bangingand had contemplated suicide. Asked to rate how happy he was on a scaleof one to 10, he put down "minus 500".
Jamie is one of 70 children to be referred each year to Brighton &Hove's Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) rapid responseteam for looked-after children. The team, set up two years ago by SouthDowns Health NHS Trust, aims to tackle cases such as Jamie's faster andimprove collaboration with other agencies.
