YOUNG CARERS: Too much to take on

6 mins read
For young people who look after members of their family, the hard work starts when the school day ends. Maria Clegg visits a project in west London to find out what life is like for young carers and what youth work is doing to help

The centre has been open for five years, and there are 147 children and young people aged between seven and 19 on its books. Around 60 of these attend on a regular basis. The missing children are those who have been referred to the centre by social services, mental health teams or family members, but, for whatever reason, are unable or unwilling to attend. Of those who are referred, but don't come, Henderson knows little beyond a name, address, contact number and a short description of their caring role. And since attendance is voluntary, all he can do is keep calling or writing, and hoping they will turn up.
