YOUNG CARERS: Time Out

6 mins read
Helping out family members for up to 50 hours a week can take its toll. But Bill Badham finds exhilaration and solidarity at the world's largest gathering of young carers.

On the same weekend that thousands of music fans gathered in Glastonbury, 15,000 young people aged between 11 and 17 had gathered from 70 young carers' projects across the UK at the fourth annual Young Carers Festival.

The journey home is a mix of exhilaration and exhaustion. There is a desire to get back, but also some reluctance, as it has been a brilliant break.

Many soon crash out, having had 48 hours of non-stop festival fun, including an opening fireworks display, two discos, every form of outdoor activity imaginable, an all-night coffee bar, partying, chatting and meeting new friends.

As Chris Hand, chief executive of South East Hampshire YMCA, says: "It was a weekend of sheer energy; successful on every level, from all the fun to young people taking charge of their lives and the messages they want the Government to hear. The working together of the young carers, the YMCA and The Children's Society is an example of partnership at its finest."
