The study, published last week, also found that half of the 100 youngcarers surveyed spent more than 20 hours a week caring for a sick ordisabled relative. A quarter of the 11- to 16-year-olds said theircaring duties had affected their education.
The survey's publication coincided with the release of Department ofHealth guidance on the needs of young carers. It follows concern thatdraft guidance on recent legislation for carers ignored carers under 16and those caring for younger siblings.
The final guidance states that young carers should be assessed using theFramework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families.
