Young ambassadors: Council aims for EU pilot rollout

Young people in Lancashire hope to convince four other European Union countries to pilot their ground-breaking young ambassador scheme.

Lancashire County Council's cabinet last week approved plans to inviteyoung representatives and politicians from the Czech Republic, Germany,the Netherlands and Poland to a summit in February to learn about thescheme.

The local authority's 18-strong Youth Ambassador Team has successfullybid for funding from Connect Youth, the UK national agency for theEuropean Youth Programme, to stage the event.

The council is piloting the ambassador programme in England on behalf ofthe British Council.

Arron Taylor, an 18-year-old member of the Youth Ambassador Team, saidthe programme had "given young people a voice in the community" andwelcomed the chance to share its success. "It is a chance to get ourviews put across Europe instead of just the UK and learn how they'retackling youth issues in their countries," he said.
