YJB creates role to prevent extremism

1 min read Youth Justice
The Youth Justice Board (YJB) is planning to appoint an adviser to tackle religious extremism in young people.

The main aim of the senior strategy adviser on prevention of extremism post will be to support practitioners' work with vulnerable young people.

According to the job advert the adviser will create a strategy on preventing the radicalisation and criminalisation of young people in the juvenile justice system. The YJB decided to create the post after youth justice practitioners and managers in some areas highlighted the problem.

The job entails developing a YJB strategy to give more support to local areas working with young people who may be vulnerable to radicalisation.

A spokesman for the Muslim Youth Helpline largely welcomed the post but added: "The Muslim Youth Helpline believes that the focus of this role should be around understanding the complex multi-tiered problems of young British Muslims, as opposed to a specific focus on radicalisation, without its contextual understanding."
