YJB aims to boost qualifications

1 min read Youth Justice
The Youth Justice Board (YJB) is in talks to raise the worth of its youth justice foundation degree to bring it in line with a social work degree.

The board has met with social care regulator the General Social Care Council to discuss whether the two qualifications can be worth the same number of academic points.

A spokesman for the YJB stressed that it was still negotiating but said currently the foundation degree was equivalent to two years at university.

The news came as the YJB published its workforce development strategy on Friday (11 December). The document  sets out priorities for youth justice staff until 2011 and warns that while there are opportunities to develop the workforce, there are also "significant risks".

It says: "The transition from a centrally-directed and national, target orientated approach to the performance management of local services will be challenging. If it is not managed effectively, it could damage the workforce development infrastructure we have already created."
