Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Kate Lawton, programme manager, Chance UK

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I'm a programme manager for Chance UK's parent mentoring programme. The first of it's kind in the UK, it matches the parents of vulnerable children with more experienced volunteer parent mentors. We support parents to work on things like setting boundaries, improving communication and using positive discipline to improve the quality of family relationships.

Describe a typical day. I match people to form new mentoring relationships, assess parents and supervise mentors on difficult issues. I spend a lot of time helping our mentors understand the subtleties of relationship difficulties, so that they can help parents relate to their kids in more positive ways. I also recruit new mentors for the programme.

What other agencies, and who else within your own organisation, do you have to work with? Depending on the case, I might work with health and social services, voluntary organisations and schools. Internally, I work with managers of Chance UK's child mentoring programmes.

How did you end up in the job? I've done lots of development work setting up new projects and liked the innovative way in which Chance UK worked.
