Working in London: Brent tops Black and ethnic teachers table

Brent has the highest proportion of Black and ethnic minority teachers in the country, according to research published by Brent council.

Almost one in three teachers in Brent are from BME backgrounds, says theWorkforce and Equalities Monitoring Report. In the borough, 32 per centof teaching staff and 61 per cent of school support staff are from BMEbackgrounds.

Councillor Alec Castle, Brent's lead member for human resources anddiversity, welcomed the findings. He cited a campaign to promoterecruitment within the local community, a drive to cut sickness absenceand the promotion of initiatives like work-life balance as keys tosuccess.

A spokeswoman for the council added that a graduate teaching programme,which allows those without degrees to study for a teachingqualification, has also helped. "We recruit from the diverse local area,which results in a diverse workforce," she said.
