Work Wise: Numbers game - School libraries - Booktrust reports onprovision of books for school libraries

Education
Primary and secondary school libraries are underdeveloped and underfunded, according to research commissioned by the charity Booktrust.

Pupils at secondary schools are worst affected, with an average of just £4.28 allocated for books per head a year, compared with the recommended spend of £14.

Roland Earl, Bookstart's research and evaluation co-ordinator, said: "We encourage schools to review their provision and renew their commitment to this vital resource."

However, the majority of staff working in both primary and secondary school libraries do not have a professional library qualification and nearly three-quarters of library staff did not know the number of books recommended for pupils each year.
